Lyft New York

I have visited New York three times this year (the first three times in my life) for a workshop. My favorite way to get around, as I am not comfortable trying out the subway on my own, is Lyft. Lyft is just like Uber, except consistently Lyft drivers tell me they are treated better than Uber drivers (many people drive for both).

My favorite thing about Lyft in NY is their option of Lyft Line. If you use Lyft Line, your fee is flat. So there's no guessing, based on whatever traffic craziness there is, how much you'll pay to get to your destination. The catch is, If you take Lyft Line, your driver may pick up another person who's going a similar direction while you're in the car. Or there may be another person when you get picked up.

So, if you're not in a hurry, and you want a much cheaper flat rate, go with Lyft Line. I paid $20 less than a cab to/from JFK.

I also discovered something else fun. I was playing a little game with the app. I requested a pick up and drop off at a hotel near LaGuardia. I had taken a cab the day before for $40. This Lyft said it wanted to charge me $75. WHAT THE FUCK?! Then I realized I was right next to the Gay Pride Parade that was happening that day. The Parade was over, but Lyft (and probably Uber and cabs) was way over charging. I walked a few blocks away and the price started going down. I was able to walk about half a mile and knocked $40 off the original estimation. That was awesome.

Then, when I got home, Lyft told me they have added something to their app where it will tell you the easiest place to go to get picked up by your driver. Isn't that awesome? I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds great.
